Akihito Tsukushi writes and draws dark fantasy manga best known for Made in Abyss. The series follows young cave raider Riko and the robotic boy Reg as they descend through the Abyss, a vast pit filled with relics, strange creatures and increasingly severe physical consequences for anyone trying to return upward. The artwork can look soft and childlike even when the story becomes violent, disturbing or biologically grotesque, creating a deliberate contrast between wonder and danger. Exploration, invented ecology and the rules of the Abyss drive much of the series. Made in Abyss belongs on dark-fantasy and survival shelves for mature readers; the soft character designs should not be taken as a guide to the level of violence or distress in the story.
