Alex Rosenberg writes philosophy of science, economics and mind, as well as historical fiction. The Atheist’s Guide to Reality presents a strongly naturalist argument that modern science leaves no room for purposes, free will or traditional religious explanations, extending that position into ethics and human self-understanding. How History Gets Things Wrong argues that explanations based on people’s stated reasons and intentions are less reliable than accounts grounded in cognitive science. Earlier academic work addresses philosophy of biology and economics. Rosenberg also wrote novels including The Girl from Krakow, set across wartime Europe, showing a very different side of his bibliography. His nonfiction is argumentative, analytic and often deliberately provocative. The Atheist’s Guide to Reality is the clearest statement of Rosenberg’s naturalism, but readers should distinguish the scientific findings he cites from the further philosophical conclusions he draws about free will, morality and meaning.
