Murder on Black Swan Lane begins the Wrexford & Sloane series with an aristocratic scientist and Charlotte Sloane, a satirical artist publishing under a male pseudonym, brought together by a suspicious death. Murder at Half Moon Gate and later books develop their partnership through chemistry, engineering, espionage and political intrigue. Penrose also wrote Regency romance under other names, but the mystery series is the clearest route into her current work. Her prose is accessible, detail-rich and strongly plot-led, with intellectual collaboration gradually becoming personal.
