Arthur Adamov wrote French-language drama associated with the Theatre of the Absurd, using repetition, failed communication and unstable social roles to show characters trapped by systems they do not fully understand. The Invasion centres on a group trying to decipher a dead writer's papers while relationships deteriorate around the task. Professor Taranne follows a respectable man whose identity is steadily dismantled by accusations and bureaucratic encounters, while Ping-Pong uses a pinball machine and the business surrounding it as an increasingly consuming structure. Later plays became more openly political and influenced by Marxist ideas. Adamov's theatre is anxious, symbolic and often less comic than Beckett or Ionesco, with situations tightening rather than resolving.
