Aya Kanno writes and draws manga that ranges from school comedy to dark historical fantasy. Otomen follows Asuka Masamune, a conventionally masculine schoolboy who privately loves sewing, cooking and romantic manga, using his double life to play with gender expectations and adolescent romance. Requiem of the Rose King is much darker, reworking Shakespeare's Henry VI and Richard III plays around Richard of York in a violent Wars of the Roses setting shaped by prophecy, identity and political ambition. Kanno's artwork is elegant and expressive, with character design carrying as much weight as dialogue. Her work fits shōjo manga, historical fantasy manga and gender-focused school comedy, with Otomen offering a lighter entry point and Requiem of the Rose King a more tragic, gothic reading experience.
