Beatrice Sparks was associated with a series of books presented as diaries or testimonies by troubled teenagers, most famously Go Ask Alice. That book was published anonymously and marketed as the diary of a teenage drug user, but later research and reporting identified Sparks as the principal writer rather than simply an editor of an authentic diary. Jay's Journal and later titles similarly use first-person diary formats around subjects such as drugs, suicide, pregnancy and youth crisis, and their claims to documentary authenticity have also been disputed. The books are direct, sensational and issue-driven.
