Brian Selznick creates illustrated novels in which drawings, photographs and prose share the work of telling the story. The Invention of Hugo Cabret follows an orphan living secretly inside a Paris railway station, where an automaton and a mysterious old toy seller lead towards the early history of cinema. Wonderstruck alternates two stories set fifty years apart, using prose for one and extended sequences of black-and-white drawings for the other. The Marvels pushes the form further by opening with a long visual narrative before moving into prose. Selznick's books are designed to be read as both text and image, making pace and revelation depend on page turns as much as sentences.
