Books by Bruce Catton

Bruce Catton wrote narrative history of the American Civil War, with particular attention to campaigns, soldiers and the Army of the Potomac. Mr. Lincoln's Army, Glory Road and A Stillness at Appomattox form his Army of the Potomac trilogy, moving from the early war through Gettysburg and finally the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomattox. His Centennial History trilogy begins with The Coming Fury and widens the frame to politics, secession and the war as a national conflict. Catton's prose is clear, chronological and strongly narrative, often moving between commanders' decisions and the experience of ordinary soldiers rather than presenting battles only as maps and manoeuvres. Much of his work sits between American Civil War history, military history and narrative non-fiction. A Stillness at Appomattox is the best-known individual volume, but Mr. Lincoln's Army should be read first for the trilogy; The Coming Fury works better for readers wanting political context before the fighting begins.
