Bryan Collier is an author and illustrator whose picture books combine painting and collage to portray Black history, neighbourhood life, music and notable public figures. Uptown, which he both wrote and illustrated, turns a child's walk through Harlem into a sequence of visual observations about brownstones, barbershops, trains, music and community. His illustrations for Dave the Potter, Trombone Shorty, Rosa and Martin's Big Words place historical figures in richly layered compositions that mix realistic portraiture with symbolic collage. The books are designed for visual reading as much as for the text, with colour, pattern and scale carrying historical and emotional information. Collier's work fits illustrated Black history, picture-book biography, art-led children's non-fiction and books about music and civil rights. Read more Less
