Carlo Collodi is best known for The Adventures of Pinocchio, the nineteenth-century Italian children's novel about a wooden puppet created by Geppetto who repeatedly ignores advice and discovers that freedom brings consequences. Pinocchio encounters the Fox and the Cat, the Talking Cricket, the Blue Fairy and a succession of dangerous or absurd situations involving school, work, deception and transformation. The original story is darker and more episodic than many later adaptations, with punishment, hunger and moral instruction appearing beside slapstick humour and fantasy. Collodi also wrote other children's and educational material, but Pinocchio is the central work associated with his name. It fits classic children's literature, moral fantasy and Italian literature.
