Chelsea Cain writes crime thrillers and comics, best known for the Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell series. Heartsick introduces Portland detective Archie Sheridan, who is still recovering from his capture and torture by serial killer Gretchen Lowell even as he returns to investigate another case. Gretchen remains psychologically central to the series after imprisonment, and later books such as Sweetheart and Evil at Heart deepen the dangerous dependence between hunter and killer. Cain's thrillers are graphic, fast-paced and interested in obsession, trauma and the media attention surrounding violent crime. She has also written the Kick Lannigan novels and comics including Mockingbird. Heartsick should be read before the later Archie Sheridan books because the continuing relationship between Archie and Gretchen matters as much as any individual investigation; readers approaching Cain through comics instead will find a separate strand of her work in Mockingbird.
