David B. is a French comics writer and artist whose graphic novels combine autobiography, history, dreams and dense symbolic imagery. Epileptic recounts his childhood and adolescence alongside his older brother’s severe epilepsy, following the family through doctors, alternative therapies, communes and esoteric movements while the young David retreats into drawing, battles and imagined worlds. The book’s black-and-white pages turn illness, fear and family tension into elaborate visual metaphors populated by warriors, monsters and crowds. In other works, including Black Paths and The Armed Garden, David B. moves between European history, myth and fantasy while retaining the same highly patterned, expressionistic drawing style. David B. belongs to autobiographical and literary comics, but his memoir is far from documentary-looking realism: like Art Spiegelman, he transforms family history through an invented visual language of symbols, monsters and recurring motifs.
