David Walliams writes comic children’s fiction about eccentric families, outsiders and adults behaving far worse than the children around them. The Boy in the Dress follows Dennis as he discovers fashion and football can coexist, while Gangsta Granny turns an apparently ordinary grandmother into the centre of a comic jewel-heist adventure. Billionaire Boy, Mr Stink and Ratburger use exaggerated wealth, poverty, school life and grotesque villains for similarly fast plots. Many books are illustrated, most notably by Tony Ross, and the humour relies on repetition, gross-out jokes and sudden sentiment rather than realism. Gangsta Granny and The Boy in the Dress are the clearest starting points, combining Tony Ross’s illustrations with fast comic plots in which children repeatedly expose the vanity or foolishness of adults.
