David Wiesner writes and illustrates picture books in which visual sequence, perspective and transformation often carry most of the story. Tuesday begins when frogs mysteriously rise into the air on lily pads and drift through an ordinary suburban night, with almost no text explaining what is happening. Flotsam follows a boy who discovers an underwater camera on a beach and develops photographs revealing impossible marine worlds and a chain of earlier children who found the same object. The Three Pigs starts with the familiar fairy tale before the pigs escape the page itself and move through other visual genres and stories. Wiesner's books reward careful rereading because background details, page borders and changes in artistic style are part of the narrative. They fit wordless picture books, visual storytelling and imaginative children's fiction.
