Don Freeman wrote and illustrated children's picture books, best known for Corduroy. The story follows a teddy bear living in a department store who explores the building at night after a girl notices that one of his overall buttons is missing. Its sequel, A Pocket for Corduroy, gives the bear another small adventure after he is accidentally left in a laundrette. Freeman's illustrations and simple prose keep the focus on familiar places, small problems and the wish to belong rather than on fantasy world-building. He also created other picture books about city life, animals and performance.
