The Roses of May and later books continue with investigators and survivors connected to the first case while introducing new crimes. Hutchison's books are dark, graphic and focused on trauma, manipulation and the aftermath of violence as much as on catching offenders. The Butterfly Garden is the necessary first book because the later series assumes knowledge of its characters and events.
