Friedrich Nietzsche wrote philosophy about morality, religion, culture, power and the challenge of creating values rather than simply inheriting them. Thus Spoke Zarathustra presents many of his ideas through a prophetic fictional voice and episodes involving Zarathustra's teaching, while Beyond Good and Evil and On the Genealogy of Morality offer more direct critiques of moral systems and their historical origins. Nietzsche's aphoristic style can be vivid and provocative but also easy to oversimplify when individual phrases are removed from context. His books are argumentative, fragmentary and concept-heavy rather than narrative. They fit nineteenth-century philosophy, ethics and cultural criticism, and are best read with attention to translation, terminology and the development of ideas across several works. Read more Less
