Stones into Schools continues with further education initiatives in the region. Significant parts of Mortenson's published account were later challenged by journalists and became the subject of public controversy, while a 2012 Montana Attorney General investigation separately examined the management and financial practices of the Central Asia Institute. His books are therefore most usefully approached as development memoir and humanitarian non-fiction that also raise questions about verification and the reliability of inspirational narratives.
