Homer is the name traditionally associated with the Iliad and the Odyssey, two foundational works of ancient Greek epic poetry. The Iliad takes place during the Trojan War and concentrates on the anger of Achilles, his conflict with Agamemnon and the fighting that follows, including the death of Hector. The Odyssey shifts from battlefield to journey, following Odysseus as he tries to return to Ithaca while facing the Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens and other dangers, while Penelope and Telemachus deal with the suitors occupying his home. Both poems combine warfare, family loyalty, divine intervention and questions of honour with long speeches and repeated storytelling patterns designed for oral performance.
