Ian Falconer wrote and illustrated the Olivia picture books, centred on an energetic young pig whose confidence, imagination and opinions often exceed the patience of the adults around her. Olivia introduces the character through everyday activities such as dressing, visiting an art museum, building sandcastles and resisting bedtime, with humour created by the contrast between her dramatic self-image and ordinary family life. Later books send Olivia into stories involving school, performance, travel and changing identities.
