Jack Finney wrote science fiction, suspense and time-travel novels that place extraordinary premises inside recognisably ordinary American settings. The Body Snatchers follows a California doctor confronting reports that friends and relatives have been replaced by emotionless duplicates grown from alien pods, making paranoia and social trust as important as the invasion itself. Time and Again sends illustrator Si Morley from twentieth-century New York into the 1880s through an experimental government project; photographs, buildings and period detail are central to the experience of time travel. Finney also wrote shorter speculative stories in which small disruptions to everyday life open routes into other possibilities. His prose is clear, plot-led and less interested in technical explanation than in how characters react when the impossible becomes plausible. The strongest categories are alien-invasion fiction, time travel and classic speculative suspense.
