Maggie Chascarillo, Hopey Glass and their changing circle of friends form the long emotional centre of Jaime Hernandez’s comics. Early episodes mix punk music, science-fiction oddities and California barrio life, but the series gradually becomes a long character chronicle about ageing, work, sexuality, family and old relationships that never disappear completely. Collections such as The Girl from H.O.P.P.E.R.S., Perla La Loca and The Love Bunglers gather major stretches of Maggie and Hopey’s story. Hernandez’s black-and-white art is clear and expressive, with subtle changes in posture and facial expression carrying much of the emotional weight.
