Jerry Ahern wrote action and survival fiction, most notably the long-running Survivalist series. Total War introduces John Rourke, a physician, weapons expert and survivalist trying to reunite with his family after nuclear war transforms the United States. Later volumes follow underground refuges, rival regimes and increasingly large geopolitical conflicts, moving the series from immediate survival into pulp science fiction and military adventure. Ahern also wrote action novels and series under other names and in collaboration. His prose is fast, weapons-heavy and episodic, with cliffhangers and recurring villains driving the sequence.
