Jesse Andrews writes contemporary young adult and adult fiction with comic narrators, awkward friendships and stories that resist sentimental treatment of serious subjects. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl follows Greg Gaines, a teenager who makes amateur films with his friend Earl and is pushed by his mother to spend time with Rachel, a classmate with leukaemia. The book uses jokes, scripts and self-conscious narration to avoid a conventional inspirational illness story. The Haters sends three young musicians on an improvised road trip after they leave music camp. Andrews's prose is fast, funny and self-aware, fitting contemporary YA, friendship fiction and comic coming-of-age stories. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is the clearest introduction to Andrews's voice because Greg repeatedly resists the role of wise or inspirational narrator; The Haters keeps the humour but replaces illness and school with music, friendship and a chaotic road trip.
