Colour, form and foundation exercises connect Johannes Itten’s influential Bauhaus teaching books. The Art of Color presents his colour wheel, contrasts, harmonies and ideas about subjective colour, combining diagrams with examples from painting. Design and Form grew out of his preliminary course and uses exercises in texture, rhythm, composition, materials and visual contrast to train perception before specialised study. Itten’s approach is systematic but strongly experiential: students are asked to make, compare and observe rather than simply learn definitions. Some of his language reflects the spiritual and pedagogical ideas of his period, so the books are best read in historical context. The most useful neighbouring categories are Bauhaus studies, colour theory, foundation art education and practical design teaching. Read more Less
