John Grogan writes memoir and humorous non-fiction about family life, pets and the disorder that ordinary domestic routines can produce. Marley & Me follows Grogan and his wife Jenny from the arrival of an energetic Labrador retriever through moves, children, career changes and the dog's long habit of creating chaos. Although Marley supplies much of the comedy, the book gradually becomes a family memoir about ageing, responsibility and the way a pet becomes tied to particular stages of life. Grogan has also written shorter autobiographical pieces and family-oriented books connected to Marley. His prose is accessible, anecdotal and direct rather than formally experimental. Marley & Me is the central entry point for Grogan's pet memoir, where the dog's behaviour provides comedy but the larger shape comes from family life changing over time. Read more Less
