Josiah Henson wrote an autobiography about slavery, escape, religion and community-building in Canada. The Life of Josiah Henson recounts his years enslaved in the United States, his eventual escape with his family and his work helping establish the Dawn Settlement for formerly enslaved people in Ontario. Later editions expanded the narrative as his public role grew. Henson writes from a strongly Christian perspective and places substantial emphasis on labour, self-discipline and freedom.
