Judith Viorst writes children's books, poetry and adult non-fiction, but is best known for Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The picture book follows Alexander through a day of small frustrations involving breakfast, school, friends and family, using repetition and complaint to make ordinary childhood disappointment funny and recognisable. Later Alexander books return to family change, money and other everyday problems, while Viorst has also written poetry and books about adult relationships and life stages.
