In that story, one small request leads to another until the sequence circles back to its starting point; If You Give a Moose a Muffin, If You Give a Pig a Pancake and If You Give a Cat a Cupcake use the same cumulative structure with different animals and domestic disasters. The repeated pattern makes the books easy for young children to anticipate and join in with, while Felicia Bond’s illustrations provide much of the visual humour. Numeroff’s stories are short, playful and suited to reading aloud rather than independent chapter-book reading.
