Anxiety, family disruption and mysteries adults fail to understand drive Lisa Thompson’s middle-grade novels. The Goldfish Boy follows Matthew, a boy with severe anxiety and obsessive-compulsive behaviours who spends much of his time watching the street from his window and becomes involved when a neighbour’s child disappears. The Light Jar centres on Nate, left alone in a remote cottage while family danger and old memories close in, and The Day I Was Erased uses a more speculative premise about a boy who wishes himself out of existence. Thompson’s prose is accessible and suspenseful without becoming frightening in an adult-thriller sense.
