Livy wrote a monumental history of Rome from its legendary foundation to his own Augustan age. Ab Urbe Condita, usually read in surviving selections or grouped volumes, moves from stories of Romulus, the early kings and republican heroes into wars with Carthage and Rome's expansion across the Mediterranean. Livy is interested not only in events but in exemplary character, civic virtue, ambition and the moral lessons Romans drew from their past.
