Longus wrote the ancient Greek pastoral romance Daphnis and Chloe. The story follows two foundlings raised by shepherd families on Lesbos who gradually discover love, sexuality and their own origins against an idealised rural landscape. Episodes involving pirates, rivals and social difference interrupt the pastoral setting, but the centre remains the pair's slow education in desire. Longus's prose is elegant, playful and highly literary, using countryside conventions rather than realistic farming life.
