Lucian of Samosata wrote Greek dialogues, satires and comic prose that mock philosophers, religious claims, literary fashion and human vanity. A True Story parodies travellers' tales by sending its narrator to the moon and other impossible places, while Dialogues of the Dead imagines famous figures stripped of status in the underworld. Other works target false prophets, wealthy patrons and philosophical pretension. Lucian's writing is brisk, sceptical and playful, often closer to modern parody than solemn classical moralising.
