Ash reworks Cinderella through a world of fairies and court life, but its central relationship develops between Ash and the King’s Huntress rather than along the expected heterosexual path. Huntress is set in the same broader fantasy world and follows two girls sent on a dangerous journey to restore balance to their kingdom. Last Night at the Telegraph Club moves to 1950s San Francisco, where Chinese American teenager Lily Hu discovers lesbian nightlife while family, immigration politics and the Red Scare increase the risks around her choices. Lo’s prose is controlled, accessible and character-led. Her work sits within queer YA, historical LGBTQ+ fiction and fairy-tale retellings.
