Matthew Cordell writes and illustrates picture books about family, friendship, animals and children learning how to respond to change. Wolf in the Snow tells much of its story visually, following a lost girl and a wolf cub through a winter landscape with very little text, while Hello! Hello! contrasts screen distraction with attention to the living world outside. Bear Island deals more directly with grief through a child who befriends an unusual bear after losing a pet. Cordell's pictures are loose and expressive, with emotion often carried through movement rather than explanation. His books suit picture-book readers, wordless storytelling and gentle social-emotional themes. Read more Less
