Lucky Luke is the defining creation of Morris, the pen name of Belgian cartoonist Maurice De Bevere. The wandering cowboy travels through a comic version of the American West, repeatedly encountering outlaws, sheriffs, saloons and historical figures; the Dalton brothers become especially important recurring antagonists. Morris wrote and drew the earliest stories and later worked for many years with René Goscinny, whose scripts sharpened the series’ parody of western conventions. The artwork is clear, dynamic and built for action and visual timing, while the stories combine shoot-outs and chases with caricature rather than realistic frontier violence.
