Mr Bingo is the professional name of an illustrator whose books turn insults, awkward humour and hand-drawn lettering into visual comedy for adults. Hate Mail: The Definitive Collection grew from a project in which people paid to receive a deliberately offensive message and drawing on a vintage postcard; the book collects examples of those personalised attacks and the strange logic behind them. His work also appears in editorial illustration and earlier book-cover projects, but Hate Mail is the clearest expression of his authorial voice. The reading experience is fragmentary and visual, closer to browsing a collection of postcards, cartoons or artist's ephemera than following an argument or story. His work fits adult humour, illustration, artist's books and rude gift books. Hate Mail is the defining starting point, but the humour is intentionally insulting and profane, so it belongs with irreverent adult cartoon collections rather than general-audience picture books.
