The Bedlam Stacks moves to nineteenth-century Peru, while The Kingdoms imagines an alternate Britain transformed by French victory in the Napoleonic Wars. Pulley's novels are atmospheric, slow-building and puzzle-like, often withholding the rules of their speculative elements until late.
