Origen wrote early Christian theology, biblical interpretation and apologetics during the third century. On First Principles attempts a systematic account of God, Christ, creation, free will and scripture, while Against Celsus answers a pagan critic of Christianity point by point. His surviving homilies and commentaries show the interpretive method for which he became especially influential, often reading biblical passages on literal, moral and spiritual levels. Some of Origen's ideas were later disputed or rejected within Christian tradition, making him important both for his influence and for later doctrinal controversy.
