Ottobah Cugoano wrote one of the earliest substantial abolitionist works by an African writer in Britain. Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil and Wicked Traffic of the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species combines personal knowledge of enslavement with Christian argument, natural-rights reasoning and direct condemnation of the slave trade. Unlike a memoir focused mainly on one life, the book is a political intervention calling for abolition and challenging the moral legitimacy of slavery itself.
