Plotinus wrote the philosophical treatises later arranged by Porphyry into the Enneads, a foundational text of Neoplatonism. His philosophy describes reality as proceeding from the One through Intellect and Soul, with human life understood partly as a movement back towards its highest source. The Enneads discuss beauty, evil, perception, the soul, time and the nature of being, often beginning from problems inherited from Plato and Aristotle before developing Plotinus’s own metaphysical system. The writing is dense, abstract and argumentative, and modern readers usually encounter it in selected treatises or guided editions. Plotinus is most relevant to readers of ancient metaphysics, Neoplatonism, philosophy of mind and the later development of Christian and Islamic thought. Read more Less
