Ray Banks writes lean British noir centred on damaged men, debt, violence and the limited choices available in working-class criminal worlds. Saturday's Child introduces Cal Innes, a Manchester private investigator and former prisoner asked to track down a casino owner's runaway son, a job that quickly pulls him back towards people he hoped to avoid. Sucker Punch takes Innes to Los Angeles, while No More Heroes and Beast of Burden return to Manchester and deepen the consequences of earlier loyalties and mistakes. Banks's prose is terse, funny in a dry way and physically immediate, with fights and threats stripped of glamour. His work fits hardboiled crime, British noir and private-eye fiction, especially for readers of Derek Raymond and Allan Guthrie who prefer short, unsentimental novels. Read more Less
