Birdsong follows Stephen Wraysford from a pre-war relationship in France into the trenches and tunnels of the First World War, then connects his experience with a later generation trying to recover that history. Charlotte Gray also uses wartime France, following a young Scottish woman who becomes involved with the Resistance while searching for a missing airman. Engleby is a darker, more unreliable first-person novel about a Cambridge student whose account of himself gradually becomes disturbing. Faulks has also written novels set in contemporary Britain and a James Bond continuation, Devil May Care.
