Stephen Jones writes and edits horror, fantasy and supernatural fiction, but his largest contribution to the genre is as an anthologist. The long-running Best New Horror series gathers notable short horror fiction from each year alongside an extensive overview of publishing, film and genre news. He has also edited themed collections devoted to vampires, zombies, werewolves, Frankenstein, Dracula, folk horror and H. P. Lovecraft, including numerous Mammoth Book anthologies. Jones tends to range widely across established writers and newer voices, so his collections work as surveys of modern horror as much as single-theme books. He also writes nonfiction on horror cinema and popular culture. Jones is especially useful as a guide into short horror fiction: a Best New Horror volume or one of his themed anthologies can introduce dozens of writers without committing the reader to a single novelist’s world.
