Susan Coolidge was the pen name of Sarah Chauncey Woolsey, best known for the children's novel What Katy Did and its sequels. The first book follows lively twelve-year-old Katy Carr, whose plans and impulsive behaviour change after an accident leaves her unable to walk for a long period. What Katy Did at School sends Katy and her sister Clover to boarding school, while What Katy Did Next takes Katy into adulthood and travel. Clover and In the High Valley continue with other members of the Carr family. The books reflect nineteenth-century ideas about character, illness and proper behaviour, but their family scenes and strong-willed heroine remain central to their appeal.
