The Gawain Poet, also called the Pearl Poet, is the conventional name given to the unknown late-medieval author associated with four Middle English poems: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Patience and Cleanness. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight places an Arthurian knight inside a test of courage, truth and courtesy after he accepts the Green Knight's beheading challenge. Pearl is a dream vision in which a grieving speaker encounters a lost child in a transformed heavenly landscape, while Patience and Cleanness retell biblical material in alliterative verse. The writing is dense, highly patterned and rich in physical description, wordplay and moral testing. These works fit Arthurian literature, Middle English poetry, medieval Christian writing and alliterative verse.
