Tim Burton writes and illustrates darkly comic books that share the visual sensibility of his films without functioning as conventional screen tie-ins. The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories collects short rhyming pieces and drawings about strange children and creatures whose unusual bodies or habits make ordinary social life difficult. Characters such as Oyster Boy, Stain Boy and the Girl with Many Eyes are treated with a mixture of macabre humour and sympathy rather than realistic psychology. The book is brief, illustrated and closer to a Gothic nonsense collection than a continuous narrative. Burton has also been the subject of art books and film books, but Oyster Boy is the clearest example of a book authored and illustrated by him. Dark humour, illustrated verse and Gothic gift-book fiction are the most useful discovery terms, especially for readers who also enjoy Edward Gorey. Read more Less
