Venture Smith wrote an early African American slave narrative recounting capture in West Africa, enslavement in North America and his eventual purchase of freedom. A Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Venture, a Native of Africa describes forced migration, labour, family separation and the economic effort required to free himself and relatives. The account is concise and practical, with particular attention to work, property and transactions rather than the later literary conventions of nineteenth-century abolitionist narratives.
