A Contract with God collects linked stories about tenants in a Bronx tenement, using expressive page layouts and urban realism rather than superhero adventure. The Spirit, created earlier as a newspaper comic supplement, follows masked detective Denny Colt through crime stories notable for cinematic framing, experimental splash pages and visual humour. Later books such as To the Heart of the Storm and The Dreamer draw on immigration, antisemitism and the early comics industry. Eisner also wrote instructional works including Comics and Sequential Art and Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative.
