M. C. Beaton's Agatha Raisin series follows a sharp-tongued former public-relations executive who retires to the Cotswolds and discovers that village life provides no shortage of murder. The Quiche of Death introduces Agatha through a baking competition that goes badly wrong, and later books give her new cases alongside changing friendships, romances and eventually professional detective work. Publication order is useful for those relationships, though the mysteries can often stand alone.
